LA VERNE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team fell to SCIAC opponent La Verne 62-58 on Monday night at the Tents.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 3-13 overall and 0-7 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens had four players in double figures in the road loss. Leading the way was
Emily Lee who had a team-high 18 points.
Kellie Au contributed 11 points while
Jadyn Lee and
Abigail Homan each chipped in with 10.
The Sagehens shot just under 40% from the floor for the game but had a great night from beyond the arc hitting on 10-22 for 45.5%. La Verne did their damage inside after they outrebounded the Sagehens 37-23 with 13 offensive rebounds and 12 second-chance points.
La Verne jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start the game and stretched it to a 9-2 run with five minutes gone in the first quarter. The Leopards controlled much of the first quarter outscoring the Sagehens 17-11 with a six-point lead heading into the second.
The Sagehens climbed back into the game in the first half as they started the second quarter with a 6-1 run to come within one point at 18-17 after a
Katie Drais three-pointer. La Verne went back on a mini-run to widen the gap to 27-20, but the Sagehens closed the first half out with some late offense and only trailed the defending SCIAC Champs 33-29 at halftime.
Pomona-Pitzer came out and took their first lead of the game at 35-33 after a three by
Emily Lee to open the third quarter. After facing their first deficit of the night, the Leopards responded with a 10-4 run to reclaim a 43-36 lead. Despite the Leopards' big third-quarter run, the Sagehens only trailed nine heading into the fourth at 49-40.
La Verne hit a three to take a 12-point lead to start the fourth quarter to put the Sagehens in a hole with nine minutes to make a comeback. Pomona-Pitzer responded with a 15-7 run led by eight points from
Emily Lee to get back within striking distance at 56-55 with 3:35 to go. The Leopards did a good job keeping the lead and preventing the Sagehens from going ahead down the stretch with some crucial stops on defense and were able to hold off Pomona-Pitzer to hand the Sagehens their third-straight single-digit loss in SCIAC play.
