Sagehens Drop SCIAC Loss To Redlands In Overtime

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team fell in overtime by the score of 71-67 to SCIAC opponent Redlands on Wednesday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.

Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 3-11 overall and 0-5 in SCIAC play.

Pomona-Pitzer had two players over 20 points as Emily Lee led the way with 22 and Jadyn Lee with 20. Katie Drais also reached double-digit scoring with 12 points off of the bench in the loss.

The Sagehens outshot Redlands from the floor at 36.2% to the Bulldogs' 27.3% with both teams shooting similarly from three at 29.4% for the Sagehens at 10-34 and 27.3% for Redlands at 3-11.  The big story of the game was unfortunately the officiating as the Sagehens were called for 30 fouls in the game while Redlands was called for 17 giving the Bulldogs 48 shots from the free-throw line and 11 for Pomona-Pitzer.

Pomona-Pitzer started out well in the first half keeping pace with the Bulldogs and eventually took the lead with the final shot of the first quarter after a made three by Ali Bennett to take a 15-13 lead.

Redlands regained the lead at the start of the second quarter at 19-15, but the Sagehens' offense took over with a 17-5 run led by seven points from Drias to hold a 32-22 lead with just under a minute in the half. Both teams added a score late with the Sagehens up 34-24 at halftime.

The Sagehens continued to build their lead in the third despite having 10 fouls called against them in the third quarter alone. The Sagehens went up by 16 after a free throw by Anna Revill to take a 50-34, but Redlands chipped away at the lead a little with the Sagehens still up 54-41 heading into the fourth.

Pomona-Pitzer's offense went cold to start the fourth and Redlands opened the quarter with an 11-2 run to trail only by four at 56-52 with 5:03 to play. Redlands got back within striking distance with 12 points off of free throws in the fourth quarter and tied the game at 60-60 with 54 seconds to play.  The Sagehens responded with a Kellie Au layup to take a 62-60 lead, but a whistle as time expired put Redlands at the line once again, and after two made three throws, the Sagehens and Bulldogs went into overtime tied 62-62.

Redlands opened overtime with a 7-2 run to take a 69-64 lead before Emily Lee hit a three to bring the Sagehens back in it at 69-67 with 21 seconds left. The Sagehens had a chance to tie late but a turnover gave Redlands the ball back and fittingly closed the game out at the line to hand the Sagehens a loss at home.
