Sagehens Fall To CMS In Sixth Street Rivalry

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Football team fell in the Sixth Street Rivalry to CMS 30-20 on Saturday afternoon at Zinda Field. 
 
Season Impact
: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in SCIAC play.  
 
Ethan Gretzinger went 17-38 for 193 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Sander Wimmer led the ground and receiving attack with nine carries for 40 yards and six receptions for 108 yards and a touchdown. Ryan Rosumny also got in the endzone with three catches for 19 yards.
 
Thomas McConnell led the defense with 13 total tackles including an interception while David Gorman eclipsed the 10-tackle mark with 11 while Eamon Glascott registered a sack on the day.  
 
Turnovers were the story of the game for Pomona-Pitzer, especially in the first half as they turned the ball over three times and fumbled a punt deep in their own territory to set the CMS offense up for scores.  The CMS defense scored 14 points off of interceptions in the first half, which made it hard for Pomona-Pitzer to mount a comeback in the second half. 
 
Key Highlights
  • CMS struck first off of a 79-yard interception returned for a touchdown to make it 7-0.
  • The Stags returned another interception for a touchdown from 35 yards out on the next possession to double up the score at 14-0.  
  • The Stags added a field goal as the Sagehens mishandled the snap on the punt that gave CMS the ball back in Sagehen territory. Although the defense held CMS to three points, the Stags held a 17-0 lead with just under seven minutes to play in the first quarter. 
  • Olson set up the first score of the game with a deep ball from Gretzinger that put him out at the one-yard line. Gretzinger cashed in with a QB sneak to get the Sagehens on the board at 17-7 with 3:26 left in the first quarter. 
  • CMS added another three points at the start of the second with another field goal to make it 20-7. 
  • The Stags took their third interception of the half to set up good field position, but the Sagehen defense held to force a punt. CMS added three more points on their final possession of the first half with a 32-yard field goal to give CMS a 23-7 lead heading into halftime. 
  • Pomona-Pitzer flipped the turnover script in the second half as they earned their first interception of the day as McConnell picked off the Stags QB to give the Sagehens the ball in CMS territory. The Sagehens capitalized on their good field position with a three-yard touchdown to Rosumny to strike first in the second half still down 23-13. 
  • The Sagehens climbed back into the game with another CMS turnover as they fumbled the punt and gave Pomona-Pitzer the ball back deep into CMS territory. The Sagehens capitalized again on favorable field position and scored off of a 24-yard pass to Wimmer to bring it to within a field goal at 23-20 with 6:05 left in the third. 
  • The Sagehen defense played great all second half and needed a stop, but the Stags offense pulled it together for a much-needed score to start the fourth quarter with a 25-yard pass to take a 10-point lead at 30-20.
  • The Sagehens tried to get back into striking distance late in the fourth, but the Stags defense held as the Sagehens turned the ball over on downs to fall to CMS in the Sixth Street Rivalry.
