Sagehens Take Down Redlands 10-9 At Ted Runner Stadium

REDLANDS, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Football team came away with a wild one-point victory over SCIAC opponent Redlands 10-9 on Saturday night at Red Runner Stadium.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in SCIAC play.  The Sagehens have also just claimed their first win in program history at Ted Runner Stadium and have won just three of the past 31 games against Redlands.

Nick Kim came in at quarterback for an injured Ethan Gretzinger and led the passing attack with a 15-20 night for 178 yards and a touchdown. Matthias Olson went over 100 yards receiving with three catches for 103 yards while Joaquin Valdez had 7 catches for 60 yards and a touchdown for a breakout game for the sophomore.

Thomas McConnell led the defense with 7 total tackles while Joshua Yen, Tanner Gomes, and Jake Sugawara came in with 6 each. Omaru Konneh racked up 1.5 sacks while Ethan Norris earned a half-sack on the defensive end.

Key Moments:
  • The defense played spectacularly for the Sagehens all night long limiting Redlands to just one touchdown on offense and keeping them out of striking distance throughout the entire second half.
  • The Redlands offense missed three field goals on the night and had a punt blocked early in the game that set up the Sagehens' first score of the game.
  • Pomona-Pitzer all of its damage on offense in the first half and scored first with a Cameron Shirangi 39-yard field goal to give the Sagehens a 3-0 lead.
  • The Sagehens punched in their only touchdown of the game just before halftime as Kim found Valdez off of a three-yard pass to cap off a 6-play, 80-yard drive to take a 10-0 lead into halftime.
  • The Sagehens took a lot of time off of the clock to start the second half, but the Bulldogs got the ball and scored a touchdown on their first possession of the third quarter to get back within striking distance at 10-7.
  • Both starting quarterbacks ended up getting knocked out of the game as the Redlands starter left the game in the fourth quarter making the comeback more difficult for the Bulldogs.
  • The Sagehen defense came up huge in the fourth quarter after the final three possessions for the Bulldogs ended in back-to-back turnovers on downs and a field goal attempt with under a minute remaining that was blocked by George Cutting as the Sagehens could virtually run out the remainder of the clock.
  • The Sagehens got the ball back on the two-yard line and the Bulldogs' defense ended up getting a safety as time expired, but the Sagehens were able to survive and came away with their first win at Ted Runner Stadium.
Up Next: The Sagehens will next return home to face Chapman on Saturday, October 14th at 7:00 p.m.
