Sagehens Take Down No. 9 Trinity 2-1 At Home

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team took down No. 9 Trinity 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.

The Sagehens got revenge on the Tigers after Trinity knocked Pomona-Pitzer out of the NCAA Tournament for the past two seasons by way of penalty kicks.  This was the first victory in program history over Trinitysince 1991 and marks the third win over a Top-10 ranked program for Pomona-Pitzer.

Ella Endo and Hannah Hong led the scoring for the Sagehens in the 2-1 victory while Evelyn Hasama added an assist on the goal from Hong. The Sagehens outshot Trinity 16-7 through the full 90 minutes with eight shots on goal for Pomona-Pitzer and just three on goal for the Tigers. The Sagehen defense again played wonderfully limiting chances for goalkeeper Hadley Johnson, who turned away two shots as she picked up her second win of the season.

Despite controlling possession for most of the game, Trinity jumped ahead first over Pomona-Pitzer after they scored off of a well-played corner to take a 1-0 lead.

The lead didn't last long as the Sagehens responded immediately with their first goal of the game just over a minute later as Endo weaved her way through the Triunity defense and curled in a beautiful left-footed shot to tie the game at 1-1 just 12 minutes into the first half.

After taking the air out of Trinity's momentum, the Sagehens continued to press their attack and broke through the Tigers' defense once again with a nice one-two ball from Amanda Khu and Hasama opened a through ball to Hong who was able to do just enough with a touch to beat the keeper and give the Sagehens a 2-1 lead in the 27th minute.

The rest of the game was ball possession for Pomona-Pitzer as Trinity needed to find a way to crack the Sagehens' backline. Vivian Rojas Collins and Summer Hasama were an excellent pairing at center back to keep scoring opportunities at a minimum for the Tigers.

Satisfied with their 2-1 lead, the Sagehens controlled the game in the second half and were able to hold off Trinity for the big upset win at home.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next hit the road as they head to St. Catherine on Friday, September 8th at 2:00 p.m.
