Sagehens Earn Road Sweep Over Tigers on Friday Night

LOS ANGELES, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer volleyball team earned a 3-0 sweep over the Occidental Tigers on Friday night. Paige Mountanos led the Sagehens attack, recording 11 kills with zero errors off 13 attempts, good for an incredible .846 hitting percentage. Eleanor Nicholson led the setters, recording 21 assists while Corrina Benson recorded 19 digs on the night. Pomona-Pitzer returns to Voelkel Gymnasium tomorrow evening when they host Sixth Street Rival CMS at 4:00 p.m.
 
How It Happened
The Sagehens got off to a quick start in set one, starting the night on an 11-4 run with kills from Paige Mountanos, Chloe Gill, and Kellan Hayes. Pomona-Pitzer continued to charge forward, working to a 20-9 lead with Mountanos, Hayes, and Charlotte Sekerka all recording kills. The Tigers were able to rally back into the contest, outscoring the Sagehens 8-5 down the stretch but the five points were all the Sagehens needed to take set one 25-17.
 
Pomona-Pitzer continued their run of heavy pressure with a 9-3 run open set two. Paige Mountanos led the way with three kills in that stretch while Paige Wilson, Chloe Gill, and Kellan Hayes each recorded one kill to aid the run. The Tigers managed to counter, closing the gap to four points at 13-9 with a 6-4 run but the Sagehens quickly pulled away again, scoring seven of the next 11 points with kills from Hayes, Mountanos, and Gill to take a 20-13 lead. Occidental only scored twice more in the set as the Sagehens went on a 5-2 run to take the game 25-15.
 
As they did in the last two sets, the Sagehens jumped out to an early lead with a 9-3 run with kills from Mountanos and Gill as well as a service ace from Savanna Cespedes. Pomona-Pitzer continued to extend their lead, working to a 14-8 advantage before the Tigers called a timeout. Out of the break, the Tigers went on a 5-1 run to cut Pomona-Pitzer's lead to 15-13, forcing a Sagehen timeout. Out of the break, the Sagehens scored five straight points with kills from Gill and Sekerka and an ace from Wilson. The Sagehens earned the sweep with a 5-2 run down the stretch to win set three 25-15 with Savanna Cespedes ending the match with an ace.
