How It Happened
In front of a packed house, the Sagehens were the ones out front in the early going, starting the match with a 4-0 run with kills from
Paige Mountanos,
Chloe Gill, and
Charlotte Sekerka. The Athenas were able to regroup and tie the game at 5-5 but Pomona-Pitzer still held the early advantage as they went on another 4-0 run to take a 9-5 lead. The Athenas quickly countered, going on a 6-2 run to tie the set at 11-11. A service error and attack error from the Athenas put the Sagehens back on top 13-11 but an 11-2 run gave CMS a 22-15 lead. The Athenas held off any comeback attempt with a slight 3-2 edge in points to take set one 25-17.
CMS started out on top in the second set with a 4-1 run, but the Sagehens responded with kills from Gill and Mountanos to take a 5-4 lead. CMS countered once again, going on a 7-2 run to take the lead at 11-7. The Sagehens fought back with a 5-1 run to tie the set at 12-12 but CMS scored four straight to make it 16-12. Despite the big swings, the Sagehens stayed in the contest, fighting back with a 5-2 run to cut the CMS lead to 18-17. The Sagehens were able to continue to pressure, tying the set at 21-21 after back to back CMS attack errors. CMS took two quick points to take a 23-21 lead, but the Sagehens responded with a kill from
Paige Wilson while benefiting from a CMS error to tie things at 23-23. Unfortunately, the Athenas recorded the final two kills of the set to take the game 25-23.
Pomona-Pitzer struggled offensively in the third set as the Athenas charged forward with a 12-2 run, only interrupted by a CMS service error. From there the Sagehens managed to get a few attacks going as
Kellan Hayes and
Tene Ariyo both recorded kills, cutting the deficit to 15-7. CMS used a 6-1 run to take a 21-8 lead before a service error and Hayes kill cut the lead to 21-10. CMS made a 4-0 run to close out the set 25-10 and hand the Sagehens a 3-0 loss.
