REDLANDS, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team suffered a loss in their SCIAC opener with a 9-7 defeat against Redlands on Wednesday night at the Thompson Aquatics Center.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 2-9 overall and 0-1 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by
Maxim Koretsky,
Kyle Green, and
Zach Whitfield who all had two goals in the loss while
Andrew Plaschke chipped in with one.
Redlands got out to a good start early in the game against the Sagehens as they outscored Pomona-Pitzer 4-1 in the first. Whitfield answered the first Bulldog goal, but Redlands ended the first with three unanswered goals to take a 4-1 lead into the second quarter.
The Sagehens made up some ground in the second as the defense shutout Redlands and Whitfield and Green found the back of the net to cut the lead down to just one goal at halftime with Redlands up 4-3.
The turning point of the game was the third quarter as the Bulldog offense put up 5 goals in the third with the Sagehens coming away with just one. Redlands opened the second half with back-to-back goals before Plaschke got on the scoresheet, but Redlands went on to score three straight to end the third to take a commanding 9-4 lead entering the fourth.
The Sagehens did a good job of climbing back into the game as they shutout Redlands in the fourth and Green scored one and two from Koretsky in the fourth, but it wasn't enough to mount a comeback as the Sagehens fell to Redlands on the road.
