Sagehens Down Whittier 24-5 In First Game Of Gary Troyer

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team defeated SCIAC opponent 24-5 in their first game of the Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament on Friday afternoon at Haldeman Pool.
 
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improve to 3-9 overall and 1-1 in SCIAC play.
 
The Sagehens were led by Dillon Joyce who netted a career-high five goals in the win. Julian Montoya and Shoenwald joined Joyce with Hat-tricks as they each netted three, while John Shafer, Jacob Whiting, and Zachary Kaplan had two and Hudson Schneider, Nico Perna, Patrick Hughes, Indigo Lee, Chase Barman, Zach Whitfield, and Andrew Plaschke had one.
 
Pomona-Pitzer got out to a great start in their first home game of the season after they shutout Whittier in the first quarter and managed to find the back of the net seven times. The Sagehens also had seven different goal scorers as Kaplan, Joyce, Perna, Hughes, Lee, Barman and Whitfield got the Sagehens up big heading into second quarter.
 
Montoya and Kaplan started the second quarter with goals to make it nine-straight before the Poets scored their first goal of the game off a five-meter penalty.  Whittier doubled their goals with back-to-back scores, but the Sagehens responded with three-straight goals from Joyce and Schoenwald to take a 12-2 lead into halftime.
 
The Sagehens continued to build its lead early in the second half. Whiting, Plaschke and Montoya started the second half with goals while Whittier broke the goal streak again with a penalty shot to make it 15-3 with 2:33 left in the third. The Sagehens ended the third with three more goals from Schneider, Shafer and Schoenwald to take a big 18-3 lead going into the fourth.
 
After taking a big lead through three quarters, the Sagehen offense kept firing and added six more goals to their total in the final eight minutes. Shafer started the fourth with a goal followed by two from Joyce, and one each from Montoya, Schoenwald and Whiting as the Sagehens opened their home season with a big SCIAC win over Whittier.
