CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer volleyball team earned their second-straight home sweep with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-23) victory over the Chapman Panthers in Voelkel Gymnasium.
Paige Wilson and
Chloe Gill led the attack for the Sagehens with 13 and 10 kills while
Kylie Mies dished out 20 assists with
Eleanor Nicholson recording 12 on the night.
Corrina Benson earned 17 digs to anchor the team's defense with the Sagehens swinging at a .204 clip on the night. The Sagehens are now 6-8 overall and 2-1 in conference play and will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 29 when they travel to Occidental at 7:00 p.m.
How It Happened
The Panthers started the match on a 4-1 run, but the Sagehens quickly responded, going on a 5-0 run to take the lead at 6-4. The two teams traded attacks in the early going, working to a 10-10 tie before the Sagehens pulled away with a 7-2 run to take the lead at 17-12. The run featured kills from
Paige Wilson,
Paige Mountanos, and
Chloe Gill along with blocks from Mountanos and
Kellan Hayes. Chapman was able to cut the Sagehen lead to 19-16 but Pomona-Pitzer outscored Chapman 6-4 down the stretch to take set one 25-20.
Chapman got off to another quick start in set two, jumping out to a 5-1 lead before extending it to 8-3. The Sagehens countered with a 4-0 run with kills from
Kellan Hayes,
Paige Mountanos, and
Chloe Gill to cut the lead to 8-7 before taking over at 12-11 with kills from
Samantha Grabb and
Paige Wilson and a
Kylie Mies ace. Chapman fought to a 14-14 tie, but the Sagehens took the lead at 17-14 with a 3-0 run capped off by an
Eleanor Nicholson ace. Pomona-Pitzer poured it on late in the set, making their way to a 23-17 with two separate 3-0 runs before earning the set two win at 25-19 with a kill from Wilson.
The Sagehens held a slight 3-2 advantage early in set three, but the Panthers fought back early, scoring four-straight to take the lead at 6-3. Chapman was able to fend off relentless pressure from the Sagehens, holding a slight lead all the way up to 17-14 but Pomona-Pitzer finally broke the Panthers with a 3-0 run to tie the set at 17-17. From there, the Sagehens used a slight 3-2 advantage to take a 20-19 lead. Chapman tied things at 20-20 but Pomona-Pitzer used kills from Mountanos, Wilson, and
Tene Ariyo to outscore the Panthers 5-3 at the end with Wilson delivering the final kill to cap off the sweep.
