LOS ANGELES, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team ended the MPSF Tournament with a 13-10 overtime win over SCIAC opponent Occidental on Sunday afternoon at the Spieker Aquatics Center.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens end the MPSF with back-to-back wins and improve to 2-8 overall.
The Sagehens were led by
Zach Whitfield who netted four goals in the win. Whitfield netted the only hat-trick of the game for the Sagehens while
Conrad Hugar and
Chase Barman had two goals and
Indigo Lee,
Nico Perna,
Jacob Whiting,
Maxim Koretsky and
Kyle Green had one.
Occidental got on the scoresheet first with a goal in the opening 30 seconds of the game that saw a response from Green to even the score at 1-1 early in the first. The Tigers reclaimed the lead at 2-1, but the Sagehens went on a roll with three-straight goals from Barman, Whiting, and Whitfield before the Tigers scored the final goal of the first with the Sagehens up 4-3.
Whitfield and Barman got the Sagehens' lead back up to three early in the second quarter, but the Tigers scored back-to-back goals to cut the deficit back down to one with four minutes left before halftime. Koretsky broke the Tigers' goal streak, but Occidental ended the half with four of the final five goals to tie the game at 7-7 heading into halftime.
The Sagehens and Tigers stayed even in the second half as Whitfield matched the Tigers with two goals in the third quarter to take a 9-9 score into the fourth. The defense took over as the two teams only scored one goal each in the fourth. Hugar put the Sagehens up early in the fourth, but the Tigers scored the equalizer with just under five minutes to go and neither team could capitalize as the SCIAC foes went to overtime at the MPSF.
Pomona-Pitzer's defense stepped up in overtime as they shut out the Tigers in both overtime periods. Hugar, Lee, and Perna added goals in overtime to ensure the win as the Sagehens survived a close one to end the MPSF Tournament.
