PASADENA, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer volleyball team dropped a five set battle to the Caltech Beavers 3-2 (25-20, 24-26, 25-21, 19-25, 15-9).
Chloe Gill led the attack with 17 kills while
Kellan Hayes and
Paige Mountanos turned in 14 and 12 kills.
Kylie Mies dished out 21 assists with
Savanna Cespedes recording 17.
Corrina Benson and
Paige Wilson both recorded over 20 digs with Benson ending the day with 26 while Wilson turned in 20. The Sagehens will be back in action on Sept. 26 when they host the Chapman Panthers at 7:00 p.m.
How It Happened
The first set was a back and forth battle that featured early ties until the Beavers managed to take a slight 8-6 lead before extending it to 10-7. Pomona-Pitzer countered with a 4-1 run to tie things at 11-11 but Caltech responded with a run of their own to take a 16-12 lead and force a Sagehen timeout. Out of the break, the Sagehens applied pressure, closing the gap to 18-17 with a 5-2 run to force Caltech to talk things over. Out of the break, the Beavers were able to go on a 7-3 run to take set one 25-20.
Set two was evenly matched in the early going with both teams trading attacks as they worked to a 9-9 tie. The Sagehens finally broke loose, scoring six unanswered points to take a 15-9 lead. Pomona-Pitzer extended their lead to a convincing 19-12 but the Beavers stormed back into the contest with an 8-1 run to tie the set at 20-20. From there the two teams battled once again with the Sagehens coming out on top with a 26-24 set two victory.
The Beavers were able to regain their match lead at 2-1 with a 25-21 victory in set three but the Sagehens responded promptly with a 25-19 victory in set four to force a decisive fifth set in Pasadena. The Sagehens and Beavers fought to an early tie, but the Beavers pulled away late and took set five 15-9 to earn the 3-2 victory over Pomona-Pitzer.
