CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Football team rattled off 34-straight points as they defeated SCIAC opponent La Verne 34-7 on Saturday night at Merritt Field.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improved to 2-1 overall and opened with a win in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by
Ethan Gretzinger who went 26-36 through the air with 256 yards passing and three touchdowns through the air.
Grady Russo led the rushing attack with 54 yards on seven attempts while
Kenric Jameison had 46 yards on 11 carries.
Sander Wimmer led all receivers with 98 yards on nine catches with two touchdowns while Mathias Olson had 46 yards and a touchdown in the win.
The defense had a big night for the Sagehens as they didn't allow a score on defense all night long with the only score coming off of a fumble return for a touchdown.
Ben Porter and
Daniel Drucker had five tackles each while Porter, Drucker, Sugawara,
Sathya Siddapureddy, and
George Cutting came away with sacks. The Sagehens also forced two takeaways as
Joshua Yen had an interception and
William Welch had a fumble recovery in the win.
Key Moments:
- The Sagehens started out in a hole as the first play of the game was a La Verne touchdown off of a stripped fumble returned for a touchdown to give the Leopards a 7-0 lead.
- Pomona-Pitzer regrouped for a 10-play, 76-yard drive ending with an 11-yard touchdown from Gretzinger to Wimmer to tie the game at 7-7 in the first quarter.
- Pomona-Pitzer took the lead in the second quarter as Gretzinger found Olson with a 24-yard strike through the air to make it 14-7 Sagehens.
- Pomona-Pitzer added another score just before halftime as Cameron Shirangi hit a 20-yard field goal to take a 17-7 lead into halftime.
- Shirangi came back for his second field goal of the night with a 23-yarder in the third to put the Sagehens up 20-7.
- Welch came away with a fumble recovery off of a bad snap by La Verne to give the Sagehens the ball in Leopard territory.
- Wimmer caught his second touchdown of the night from Gretzinger off of a 25-yard pass to take a 27-7 lead at the end of the third.
- Pomona-Pitzer iced the game in the fourth with a four-yard run from Brennan Dragomer for a 34-7 lead with 13 minutes left in the fourth.
