CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer volleyball team opener their SCIAC slate with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-19) sweep over the Whittier Poets on Friday night. The Sagehens swung at a .190 clip on the night with
Chloe Gill (13k),
Paige Wilson (11k), and
Paige Mountanos (10k) leading the attack.
Kylie Mies and
Eleanor Nicholson both recorded 15 assists while
Corrina Benson earned 12 assists with 21 digs. In addition to Wilson's 11 kills, Wilson recorded a team-high 22 digs on the night. The Sagehens are now 1-0 in conference play and 5-7 on the season. Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Sept. 23 when they travel to Caltech at 2:00 p.m.
How It Happened
The Sagehens got off to a quick start as they went on a 5-1 run to start the game with kills from
Paige Mountanos,
Kellan Hayes, and
Chloe Gill along with a
Corrina Benson ace. The Poets quickly answered, using a 5-0 run to take a slight 6-5 lead. The Sagehens continued to attack, regaining the lead at 12-8 after a 7-2 run but the Poets fought back to tie things at 12-12. Pomona-Pitzer used kills from
Paige Wilson,
Paige Mountanos, and
Chloe Gill to keep the pressure on, working to a 19-15 lead but Whittier countered once again, pulling within one at 20-19 before tying the set at 22-22. The Sagehens were able to take the last three points, capping off the set with a block from Mountanos to go up 1-0 in the match with a 25-22 set one victory.
Set two was nearly identical at the start as the Sagehens jumped out to a 6-2 lead before expanding the gap to 12-5. The two teams traded 4-0 runs with the Sagehens making their way to a 16-9 lead. Whittier fought back into the set as they surged to an 18-18 tie with a 9-2 run. After a Whittier service error, Pomona-Pitzer went on another 4-0 run to regain the lead at 22-18 before the two teams traded rallies with Pomona-Pitzer's
Charlotte Sekerka recording the final kill of game to give the Sagehens set two 25-22.
Whittier held a slight 3-2 lead in set three, but Pomona-Pitzer quickly jumped out to a four-point lead at 7-3 as
Paige Mountanos and
Chloe Gill both recorded kills with
Eleanor Nicholson recording an ace. Pomona-Pitzer's attacked remained strong as the Sagehens extended their lead d to 11-7 before the Poets pulled within one at 11-10 with a 3-0 run. The Sagehens saw kills from Wilson, Sekerka, Gill, and Mountanos en route to an 18-14 lead before a 5-3 run from Whittier closed the gap to 21-19. The trio of Wilson, Gill, and Mountanos put the game away for the Sagehens down the stretch as each player recorded a kill in a 4-0 run to end set three 25-19 and give Pomona-Pitzer the 3-0 sweep over the Poets.
