LOS ANGELES, CA. – The No. 9 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team achieved their best start in program history after their 3-0 win at SCIAC opponent Occidental on Wednesday night at Jack Kemp Stadium.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improved to 7-0 to start the season, which is the best start in program history since the 1988 squad started the year 6-0-1.
The Sagehens were led by
Amanda Khu,
Ella Endo, and
Kendrick Dahlin who all netted first-half goals in the win while
Taryn Kaneko and
Kelsey Shintaku added assists.
Patricia DePalma got the start and earned the win in goal with two saves including saving a penalty shot.
The Tigers' keeper was tested early as she was forced to stop a few chances in the opening minutes of the match. The Sagehens broke through in the 18
th minute after Kaneko played in a cross to the feet of Khu who then settled with a touch and beat the keeper to the right to give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead.
The Sagehens doubled up their lead after former Tiger Endo drew a penalty in the box and went on to convert her PK for a homecoming goal to give the Sagehens a 2-0 advantage in the first half.
Pomona-Pitzer extended the lead to 3-0 before halftime as some beautiful midfield play allowed Shinatku to thread a through ball to Dahlin who took a touch and slotted it past the keeper to make it 3-0 Sagehens heading into halftime.
After taking a big lead in the second half, the Sagehens continued to control possession on the road to make sure the Tigers couldn't mount a comeback in the second half. Despite their good defensive work, the Sagehens conceded a penalty in the 86
th minute, but DePalma continued her streak of zero goals allowed as the Sagehens came away with the shutout win.
