Sagehens Win Home Opener Against Pacific

CLAREMONT, CA. --  The Pomona-Pitzer Football team came away with a win in their home opener with a 24-17 win over non-conference opponent Pacific on Saturday night at Merritt Field.
 
The Sagehens were led by Ethan Gretzinger who went 22-29 through the air with 255 yards and three touchdowns on the night. Mathias Olson had his second-straight 100-yard game with 108 yards and two touchdowns while Sander Wimmer finished just under the 100-yard mark with 91. Brennan Dragomer and Gretzinger led the rushing attack as Dragomer ran for 41 yards and Gretzinger added 42.
 
Tanner Gomes and Thomas McConnell led the Sagehen defense with eight tackles each while the Sagehens forced three turnovers with two of them coming via turnover on downs and Sathya Siddapureddy forcing a crucial fumble late in the fourth quarter. George Cutting and Omaru Konneh also came away with sacks in the win.
 
Key Moments
  • The Sagehens started out with a big hold on defense as they forced the Boxers to turn the ball over on downs in their first possession of the game.
  • Pomona-Pitzer earned points on their first possession of the game with a 12-play, 68-yard drive that ended with a Cameron Shirangi field goal to take a 3-0 lead.
  • Pacific answered with a 10-play, 57-yard drive that ended with a touchdown pass to take the first lead of the night for the Boxers and after an unsuccessful 2-point conversion, lead 6-3 to start the second quarter.
  • The Sagehens turned the ball over on their next possession of the game to give Pacific the ball deep in their own territory, but the defense held the Boxers to three with Pacific up 9-3 heading into halftime.
  • The Sagehens came back to reclaim the lead in the third quarter after a 20-yard touchdown pass to Olson capped off a 10-play, 82-yard drive.
  • The Sagehens responded again with another deep ball as Ryan Rosumny found the endzone after a 38-yard strike from Greztinger to take a 17-9 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
  • Pacific came back with a touchdown drive to start the fourth off of a 30-yard pass and after a successful 2-point conversation, tied the game at 17-17.
  • Pomona-Pitzer responded and marched down the field for 70 yards in seven plays as Olson caught his second touchdown of the night from 22-yard outs to put the Sagehens back on top at 24-17.
  • The Sagehen defense came up huge in the later stages of the game as they forced a turnover on downs late in the fourth quarter to give the ball back to the offense and waste valuable minutes late in the game.
  • Pacific got the ball back and threatened inside the Sagehens' redzone but Siddapureddy forced a fumble with a hit on the Pacific quarterback that was recovered by McConnell as the Sagehens were able to run out the clock and come away with the win.
