SAN ANTONIO, Tx. – The Pomona-Pitzer volleyball team dropped their first match of the Trinity Fall Classic 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-20) to the No. 13 MIT Engineers on Friday afternoon. The Sagehens recorded 27 kills against the Engineers while swinging at a .101 clip. Coming into the match,
Kylie Mies needed just 10 assists to reach the 1,000 milestone and recorded 13 against the Engineers, becoming the 7th Sagehen in the rally scoring era to surpass the milestone.
How It Happened
The Sagehens got off to a quick start with a 4-1 run in the first set, but the Engineers rallied back to tie the game at 7-7 before scoring five-straight to make it 13-7. MIT continued to pull away, working their way to a 19-10 lead. The Sagehens tightened things up down the stretch, but MIT held a 6-5 edge to take the opening set 25-15.
Set two saw the Engineers start with a 5-2 run before kills from
Chloe Gill and
Kellan Hayes closed the game to 8-6. MIT scored another five-straight to force a Sagehen timeout with a 13-6 lead. MIT scored first out of the break, but the Sagehens scored four-straight with
Paige Wilson and
Kellan Hayes recording kills before back-to-back
Kylie Mies aces to cut the lead to 14-10. MIT was able to close the set 25-17, scoring 11 points while the Sagehens recorded seven, putting the Sagehens down 2-0.
Set three was a much tighter set with the Sagehens taking an early 4-2 lead before trading attacks with the Engineers en route to a 12-12 tie. The Engineers turned it on, going on a 7-0 run to take a 19-12 lead before
Tene Ariyo and
Kellan Hayes both recorded kills to end the run. MIT went on a 4-1 run to extend their lead to 23-15. Pomona-Pitzer made a late push with a Hayes kill, two MIT errors, and a
Paige Wilson ace to force the Engineers to call a timeout with the score at 23-19. Out of the break, the Engineers outscored the Sagehens 2-1, handing the Sagehens a 25-20 loss in the set and 3-0 loss in the match.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action later this evening when they take on the No. 12 Trinity Tigers at 5:00 p.m.
