Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Tx. – The Pomona-Pitzer volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-20) to the No. 12 Trinity Tigers on Friday evening. Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action with two matches tomorrow when they take on Southwestern (Tx.) and Franklin and Marshall at 8:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to close out the 2023 Trinity Fall Classic.
How It Happened
The Sagehens fell behind 3-0 early in set one against the No. 12 Trinity Tigers. The Tigers run came to a quick stop after a block from
Paige Mountanos and
Kellan Hayes, but Trinity charged forward to a 10-3 lead to force a Sagehen timeout. The Tigers recorded an attack error out of the break but regrouped with a 9-4 run to force the Sagehens to call another timeout trailing 19-7. Pomona-Pitzer managed to record five more points in the set but a dominant performance from Trinity gave the Tigers set one 25-12.
In set two, the Tigers struck first and held a 4-2 lead before the Sagehens fought back with a kill from
Samantha Grabb and a block from Grabb and
Tene Ariyo to take a 6-4 lead to force an early Trinity timeout. The Tigers earned the first point out of the break but kills from
Paige Wilson and
Tene Ariyo put the Sagehens up 9-6. The Sagehens continued to hold the slight advantage, working their way to a 14-10 lead with
Kellan Hayes and
Chloe Gill both recording kills. The Tigers went on a 7-2 run to take a 17-16 lead, capping it off with two aces to force a Pomona-Pitzer timeout.
Samantha Grabb recorded a kill out of the break to tie things at 17-17 but an 8-2 run for Trinity gave the Tigers the set win at 25-19.
Set three featured a back and forth start with the two teams tied at 3-3 before the Tigers worked their way to an 8-5 lead. The Sagehens quickly tied it back up at 8-8 with kills from
Paige Wilson and
Paige Mountanos. Trinity regained the lead at 12-9 but the Sagehens rallied back once again, this time tying it at 13-13 before taking a 15-13 lead with a kill from Mountanos and ace from
Eleanor Nicholson. Trinity went on a 4-0 run that included three-straight aces, forcing the Sagehens to call a timeout trailing 17-15. Pomona-Pitzer was held to just five points out of the break while the Tigers took the set 25-20 to defeat the Sagehens 3-0.
