WHITTIER, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team opened up their SCIAC season with a 3-2 road win against Whittier on Wednesday night at Memorial Stadium.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 2-2-1 overall and 1-0 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens had three different goal scorers in the win as
Kieran Veloria,
Alex Greenstein and
Niclas Ulrich all found the back of the net while Greenstein and Aidan McLennan also recorded an assist.
Ethan Bae got the win in goal for the Sagehens with nine saves.
A ton of shots by both teams in this SCIAC opener as the Poets put up 18 shots with 13 on goal while Pomona-Pitzer took 14 shots with seven on goal. Whittier had the advantage on corner kicks with 14 to the Sagehens' four with the Poets committing 17 fouls on the night and Pomona-Pitzer with 10.
The Sagehens started with a bang as they netted the fastest goal on record in program history 11 seconds into the match. Off of the kickoff, Ulrich played a long ball that was flicked on by Greenstein and Veloria found himself one-on-one with the keeper to put the Sagehens out in front.
After scoring in the first minute of the match, the Sagehens kept a 1-0 lead up until three minutes before halftime when Whittier scored their equalizer to make it 1-1 heading into halftime.
Pomona-Pitzer reclaimed the lead in the 52
nd minute as McLennan played in a low cross that Greenstein took first time and beat the keeper far post to put the Sagehens back on top 2-1.
The dagger goal came off of the foot of Ulrich by way of a free kick in the 57
th minute of the match. Ulrich put his foot through a rocket freekick from about 35-yards out into the upper 90 of the goal to give the Sagehens a 3-1 lead.
After securing a two-goal lead, Whittier threatened late in the game with a goal in the 83
rd minute to cut it down to 3-2, but the Sagehens were able to hold off the Poets to claim their first SCIAC win of the season.
