Box Score CLAREMONT, CA. – Senior Brendan Mora became the 22nd Sagehen to eclipse the 1,000-point-point career scoring list after the Sagehens' 87-69 win over Occidental on Wednesday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 16-5 overall and 11-1 in conference play.
The Sagehens were led by Mora who went for a season-high 27 points in only 24 minutes, just one point off his career-high of 28. Joe Cookson had 14 for the Sagehens while Ty Bergman had 13.
The Sagehens shot over 50% from the field at 52.5% and hit on 40% of their three's. Pomona-Pitzer dominated every statistical category against the Tigers after they outrebounded Occidental 37-28, had 42 points in the paint, and 14 fast break points.
Pomona-Pitzer started out hot against the Tigers and jumped out to an early 6-0 lead out of the gate with early buckets from Mora and Cookson. The Tigers came back with back-to-back threes to make it 6-6, but the Sagehens sparked an 11-2 run to build a comfortable 17-8 lead early in the first half. Mora was on a mission to get his 1,000th point in the first half and earned it with his 14th point of the half with 11:09 left to play. The Tigers made a small dent into the Sagehens' lead late in the first half but a fadeaway jumper by Mora left the Sagehens with a 43-33 lead heading into the locker room.
The first five minutes of the second half was all Sagehens after they picked up right where they left off and continued to build their lead over Occidental. Bergman came up with a big play on both ends after a block at the defensive end turned into a transition three to put the Sagehens up 20 at 57-37. The Sagehens went on to score on their next possession to make it 59-37 and forced the Tigers to burn a timeout with 13:53 to play.
After building a sizeable lead, the Sagehens were able to take their foot off of the gas but ended up taking their largest lead of the game at 27 points after an Owen Avdolovic layup to extend the lead to 72-47. The Sagehens cruised to their seventh-straight conference win and remain atop the SCIAC standings after their 87-59 win over Occidental.
