Sagehens Split Opening Match Day With Loss Against APU And Win Over Hope International

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team split in their opening matches of the 2023 season with a 6-3 loss to Azusa Pacific and came back for a big 5-4 win over Hope International on Saturday afternoon.

The Sagehens started their day with a dual match away at Azusa Pacific. The Sagehens started in a hole after they dropped all three of the doubles matches to fall three points behind to start.

In doubles play, Leyton Bohren and Marko Nikoliuk beat Matthew Feng and Eshaan Lumba 6-3 at #1 doubles. Elias Walter and Miha Velicki also won 6-3 against Mukund Madabhushi and Hayden Snyder at #2 doubles. At #3 doubles, Brody Bohren and Vili Bonev beat Luke Feng and Neil Chulani  6-2.

In singles play, Hayden Snyder beat Leyton Bohren 6-1, 6-2 at #1 singles. At #2 singles, Elias Walter defeated Mukund Madabhushi 6-4, 6-3. Kush Patel beat Marko Nikoliuk 6-0, 6-4 at #3 singles. At #4 singles, Miha Velicki defeated Matthew Feng 6-2, 6-0. Brody Bohren won against Roshan Morey 6-1, 1-6, 2-4 via retirement at #5 singles. At #6 singles, Eshaan Lumba beat Cole Rassner 6-3, 6-1.

The Sagehens then returned home for their home opener against Hope International later in the day.  The Sagehens started with two of the first three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.

in doubles play, Mukund Madabhushi and Hayden Snyder defeated Tobias Dreher and Reid Lizardo 6-3 in the #1 doubles match. The #2 doubles match saw Luke Feng and Neil Chulani fall to Lucas Suarez and Yuya Koide 6-7. Roshan Morey and William Farnfield earned a 7-6 victory over Yazid Benchegra and Ricky Lizardo in the #3 doubles match. 

In singles play, Tobias Dreher defeated Matthew Feng 7-6, 6-4 in the #1 singles match. Neil Chulani fought back from a 6-3, 4-4 deficit to beat Reid Lizardo 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the #2 singles match. Lucas Suarez dominated Rohun Krishnan 7-6, 6-5 in the #3 singles match. In the #4 singles match, Luke Feng fell to Yazid Benchegra 6-7, 3-6. John Wehrle beat Yuya Koide 6-3, 6-4 in the #5 singles match. The final singles match of the day saw William Farnfield come from behind to beat Ricky Lizardo 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.

Despite a close match, Pomona-Pitzer managed to come away with a 5-4 victory over Hope International.
