Box Score LA VERNE, CA. -- The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team continued its SCIAC winning streak with an 89-72 win over La Verne on Saturday afternoon at the Tents.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improve to 17-5 overall and 12-1 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by Joe Cookson who notched a game-high 25 points in the win. Ty Bergman tallied 19 points while Brendan Mora put up 18 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists as well.
Pomona-Pitzer had one of its best shooting games all season after they shot 54.1% from the field and 47.1% from beyond the arc. The Sagehens outrebounded La Verne 35-28 and scored 40 points in the paint.
La Verne stayed with Pomona-Pitzer early on in the first half with the two teams even at 9-9 with four minutes gone. La Verne stayed even at 16-16, but the Sagehens started to pull away after a 10-0 run capped off by a Bergman tip-in to make it 26-16 at the midway point of the first half. La Verne kept the deficit around 10 points and even made a run just before halftime to cut the lead down to 42-38, but the Sagehens extended their lead late in the first half with some made free throws by Cookson and Bergman to take a 46-38 lead into halftime.
The Sagehens quickly extended their lead over ten points in the early stages of the second half and continued to build its lead over the Leopards. La Verne never got the lead back down into single digits throughout the second half and the Sagehens ended up pushing their lead to 20 points after a layup by Cookson with 7:46 left to play. Pomona-Pitzer took its largest lead of the night with just under two minutes remaining as Mora finished off an and-one and the Sagehens finished off the Leopards for the SCIAC sweep over La Verne with the road win.
