Sagehens Cruise To 74-58 Win At Chapman

Box Score

ORANGE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team kept their top spot in the SCIAC after their 74-58 win over Chapman on Wednesday night at the Hutton Sports Complex.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens earned their fifth-straight conference win to improve to 14-5 overall and a SCIAC best 9-1 in conference play.

The Sagehens were led by Ty Bergman who went for 19 and 7 in the win.  Pete Boyle tallied 15 points and 8 rebounds while Joe Cookson added 13 points in the win.

The Sagehens had another nice night shooting the basketball just under 50% from the field and 39.3% from three. Pomona-Pitzer destroyed Chapman on the boards after they outrebounded the Panthers 49-22 with 16 second-chance points and 30 points in the paint.

Pomona-Pitzer got out to a good start on offense with an early 7-3 lead, but the offense stalled out a bit shortly after as Chapman came back to take their only lead of the first half at 10-9 six minutes into the game. That's about as good as it got for the Panthers after the Sagehens quickly reclaimed the lead and extended it to 10 points at 26-26 after a layup by Charlie Treene and then made it a 15-point advantage after buckets by Mora and Boyle made it 31-16 with just over seven minutes to play.

The Sagehens went on to take their largest lead of the first half at 17 points after a made three by Boyle to make it 36-19, but Chapman strung together some baskets at the end to make it 39-26 heading into halftime.

Pomona-Pitzer stayed on top for the entire second half and held a 59-53 lead after a Cookson three midway through the second half.  The Sagehens were in no danger of a comeback in the second half against the Panthers after they maintained a 10+ point lead over Chapman for the final 20 minutes of the game.

The Sagehen defense had a big showing in Orange after they held Chapman to just 58 points and just 36% from the field as the Sagehens shut down the Panthers on the road for their ninth SCIAC win of the season.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next travel to Redlands on Saturday, February 4th at 7:00 p.m.
