Box Score CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team fell to Chapman 66-62 on Wednesday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens drop to 6-12 overall and 4-7 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens had three starters in double-digits with Kaitlyn Leung leading the way with 14, Madison Quan with 13 and Emily Church with a double-double at 11 and 11.
Chapman outshot the Sagehens from the floor at 44.6% and also shot above 40% from three at 42.9%. The Sagehens won the turnover battle after they forced the Panthers into 25 turnovers and also won the battle in the paint outscoring Chapman 24-16 down low.
The Panthers got out to a hot start shooting in the first quarter and right out of the gate hit back-to-back threes by Campas, but a good start for Church and the Sagehens as well with back-to-back layups, one being an and one, to stay with the Panthers at 8-5 early in the first. It was a big shooting first quarter for Chapman from three as they ended with 55% from beyond the arc, but despite their good shooting from three, the Sagehens stayed with Chapman and only trailed 22-20 heading into the second quarter.
The Panthers got great minutes from Campas in the first half after the point guard for the Panthers didn't miss on her first 5 shots with a three to open the second quarter for her 14th point in 12 minutes. Chapman went up by 10 at 30-20 with 6:43 left in the half, but the Sagehens closed the second quarter out strong to keep it well within reach at 39-33 heading into halftime.
The Panthers had a good third quarter where they outscored the Sagehens 20-17. Chapman took a 15-point lead three minutes into the third at 48-33, but the Sagehens cut it back down to six after a Maison Yee three made it 56-50 with just under two minutes to play in the third. The Panthers got the final two baskets of the quarter to go their way and took a 59-50 lead into the fourth.
The Sagehens outscored the Panthers in the fourth and got the lead down to within striking distance at 61-58 with 2:57 to play. The defense stepped up for Pomona-Pitzer in the fourth after they held the Panthers to just seven points. The Panthers had a chance to put the game out of reach at the free throw line after a series of fouls called on Pomona-Pitzer, but Chapman missed both at the line to give the Sagehens a chance to win the game with the final shot. The Panthers went on to force a turnover on the final possession of the game and were able to escape Voelkel Gymnasium with the win.
