CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team came up short with a 55-51 loss against SCIAC opponent La Verne on Wednesday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 2-7 overall and 0-3 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by
Jadyn Lee who had 18 points, six rebounds, and six assists in the loss.
Abigail Homan was also in double figures with 15 points while
Emily Lee added nine.
The Sagehens and Leopards faced off in a slow-paced battle that saw 43 total fouls called in the game. The Sagehens shot 37.3% from the floor and 23.1% from three with La Verne hitting at 34.8% from the floor and 27.8% from three. The Sagehens forced La Verne into 26 turnovers while committing 21 of their own while the biggest difference in the stat column was the rebound margin, which La Verne won 37-20.
La Verne started off with a quick lead in the opening quarter at 7-2 before the Sagehens sparked a 10-3 run ended by a
Jadyn Lee three to take their first lead of the game at 12-10. The Leopards ended the first with a basket with the two teams headed in the second quarter tied at 12-12.
The Leopards had the advantage in the second quarter after they held the Sagehen offense to their lowest-scoring quarter of the game at seven points while adding 15 to their total. La Verne took back their lead at 15-14 but the Sagehens came back to tie the game at 19-19 with 4:21 left in the first half. La Verne ended the first half with a big 8-0 run to take a 27-19 lead heading into halftime.
The Sagehens trailed by as much as 11 early in the third quarter but got the lead down to just four points at 33-29 after a jumper by
Jadyn Lee. La Verne maintained their lead over the Sagehens at 39-33 heading into the fourth.
La Verne stretched its lead to its largest of the night at 12 points at 48-36 but the Sagehens made a late surge to get back into the game down four points at 52-48 after forcing turnovers that led to quick offensive production. The Sagehens even got the game down to a one-possession contest at 54-51 but were forced to foul where La Verne closed the game out at the line and handed the Sagehens the loss at home.
