CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team fell to non-conference opponent Wheaton College 84-81 in overtime on Friday afternoon at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: with the loss, the Sagehens fall to 2-8 overall.
The Sagehens were led by
Jadyn Lee who set a new career-high with 27 points.
Abigail Homan also set a new career-high with 20 while
Emily Lee had 16 and
Ali Bennett with 10.
Pomona-Pitzer shot well in their return from the holidays after they went 47.8% from the floor and 14-28 for 50% from beyond the arc. Wheaton did all of their damage inside the arc as they outscored the Sagehens 56-28 in the paint and outrebounded the Sagehens 40-23.
The Thunder took the lead early on in the first with a 7-0 lead out of the gate. Wheaton extended its lead to 15-6 with 3:47 left in the first and went on to take a 23-13 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Sagehens faced an 11-point deficit early in the second quarter but then started to chip away at the lead as the first half winded down. The Sagehens went 5-9 from three in the second quarter and five points late from
Jadyn Lee brought the Sagehens to within one point at 37-36 at halftime.
Pomona-Pitzer came out in the second half and took their first lead of the game at 48-47 after a layup by Homan and got their lead to as much as four points after a three by
Emily Lee up 53-49 with 2:53 left in the third. The Sagehens kept their advantage at four points with a 59-55 lead heading into the fourth.
The lead never got to more than two points for either team in the fourth quarter as they continued to answer down the stretch. Wheaton held a two-point lead at 70-68 before
Jadyn Lee hit a three to give the Sagehens a 71-70 lead with 1:02 to play. Wheaton came back with back-to-back buckets late in the game to take a 73-71 lead but
Jadyn Lee was fouled heading to the hoop with one second remaining and converted both of her free-throws to send the game into overtime.
Wheaton won the jump and got some early overtime baskets to take a 78-73 with 2:46 to go. The Thunder also came away with some big rebounds late in the game to give themselves some good second-chance opportunities to stay ahead in overtime. The Sagehens made it interesting late with a big three by Bennett to make it 84-81 with 34 seconds left. Pomona-Pitzer's defense came away with a big stop on their next possession and gave themselves a chance to tie the game with a final shot. Lee had a chance off of the inbound but came up short as the Thunder survived overtime against Pomona-Pitzer.
