CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team fell to No. 21 Tufts University 85-62 on Saturday afternoon at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: with the loss, the Sagehens fall to 2-9 overall.
The Sagehens were led by
Abigail Homan who notched her second consecutive career-high in points with 21 in the loss. Katie Drias came off of the bench with 13 points while
Emily Lee was also in double figures with 11.
The Sagehens were handed a tough matchup to end the calendar year with Tufts as former Pomona-Pitzer Head Coach Jill Pace returned to Claremont to take on the Sagehens. Tufts did a lot of their damage down low as they scored 36 points in the paint and outrebounded Pomona-Pitzer 34-18.
The Sagehens had a solid first quarter to open the game and shot 46.7% from the floor in the first and hitting on four of their seven three attempts. Pomona-Pitzer held a lead early in the first at 8-5 after an
Ali Bennett three gave the Sagehens their first lead of the contest. The Jumbos then went on a 10-0 run to reclaim the lead, but the Sagehens chipped away at the first quarter lead with some late baskets to trail 26-18 heading into the second.
Both defenses showed up in the second quarter, but the Jumbos made it hard on the Sagehens' offense limiting Pomona-Pitzer to just seven points in the second quarter. The Sagehens got the lead down to five to start the quarter after a three by
Emily Lee, but it was all Tufts after that as they grew their lead to 42-25 heading into halftime.
The Sagehens came out in the second half and outscored Tufts 22-19 to bring the gap closer to within reach. Pomona-Pitzer chipped away at the lead throughout the third quarter and got it down to 10 points after a pair of made free-throws by Homan to make it 57-47 with 1:51 to go. Tufts expanded its lead late in the quarter and took a 61-47 advantage into the fourth.
The Sagehens slowed down on offense in the fourth as Tufts started to pull away. The Jumbos continued to build their lead as they outscored the Sagehens 24-15 in the final quarter as the Sagehens fell to No. 21 Tufts to close out their 2023 calendar year.
