RIVERSIDE, CA. -- The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team extended its win streak to nine games to start the season with their 78-63 win over non-conference opponent La Sierra on Saturday night.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improved to 9-0 overall on the year.
The Sagehens were led by
Joe Cookson who led all scorers with 28 points in the win. Four Sagehens were in double digits in the scoring column as
Jasper Hedin tallied 12,
Charlie Treene with 11, and
Ty Bergman notched his fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Sagehens had another exceptional night shooting the basketball at 46.4% from the field and 41.4% from three hitting on 12-29 shots from beyond the arc. Pomona-Pitzer's good shooting night was the big difference in the game as La Sierra outscored the Sagehens in the paint 24-20 and got 26 points from their bench.
La Sierra started with a small lead at 8-5 to start the game, but the Sagehens quickly established an early advantage with a 14-5 run to take a 22-10 lead after a Cookson and-one with 12:29 left to play in the first half. The Eagles chipped away at the lead throughout the first half and got the deficit down to one point with the Sagehens leading 30-29 with just over four minutes to play, but after letting La Sierra back into the game, the Sagehens went on a late run just before halftime and went into the locker room with a 41-34 lead.
The Sagehens came out in the second half and immediately grew their lead to over 10 points after a jumper by Cookson made it 47-36 about four minutes into the second half. Pomona-Pitzer continued to shoot the ball well and the defense stepped up in the second half only allowing 29 points. The Sagehens went up by as much as 20 points after a three by
Hayden Moser made it 64-44 with 10 minutes left to play. After taking control of the game, the Sagehens maintained their large advantage over the Eagles and took their largest lead of the night at 22 points with a 77-55 lead.
La Sierra cut into the lead late in the game, but the dominant second half by the Sagehens allowed them to comfortably cruise to the large victory on the road.
