CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team fell to SCIAC opponent Redlands 15-13 on Saturday afternoon at Haldeman Pool.
Season Impact: with the loss, the Sagehens fall to 12-17 overall and 7-3 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by
Indigo Lee and
Chase Barman who each netted a hat-trick with three goals each in the loss. Andrew Plashcke and
Jacob Whiting had multi-goal games with two goals apiece while
Julian Montoya,
Zach Whitfield, and
Jack Ryan had one.
The difference in the game was the hot start by the Bulldogs in the first quarter. Redlands netted six goals in the first quarter, which was their most of any quarter, while the Sagehens scored only two, the lowest of any quarter.
The Bulldogs started out with five of the first six goals to jump out to a 5-1 lead with Barman getting a goal for the Sagehens. After four-straight goals by Redlands, Lee netted his first goal of the game, but the Bulldogs ended the first with a goal to take a 6-2 lead into the second quarter.
The Sagehens chipped away at the lead in the second quarter as Plaschke and Lee opened the quarter with goals. Redlands responded with two goals of their own, but the Sagehens ended with back-to-back goals from Whiting and Whitfield to trail 9-6 at halftime.
Pomona-Pitzer cut it down to two goals with the first goal of the third quarter from Barman, but Redlands came back with two goals to get their lead back up to a comfortable spot. Montoya Lee, and Plaschke also got on the board for the Sagehens in the third, but Redlands still held a 14-10 lead heading into the fourth.
Despite being down four goals entering the final quarter, the Sagehens made it interesting as Barman Ryan and Whiting scored the first three goals of the fourth to make it a one-goal game at 14-13 with 1:29 left in the game. Redlands came away with a big goal late with 40 seconds to play and were able to run out the remainder of the clock to come away with the win.
