Big Fourth Quarter Pushes Sagehens Past Tigers

LOS ANGELES, CA. -- The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team defeated SCIAC opponent Occidental 14-11 on Wednesday night at De Mandel Aquatics Center.  

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 13-17 overall and 8-3 in SCIAC play.  

The Sagehens were led by Kyle Green who scored a game-high four goals in the win. Zach Whitfield also netted a hat-trick with three goals, Indigo Lee with two, while Chase Barman, Conrad Hugar, Miles Chiang, Andrew Plaschke, and Jack Ryan had one each.  

The Tigers stayed with the Sagehens for the majority of the game as it was a tight contest throughout the four quarters. Pomona-Pitzer started off alternating goals with the Tigers as Whitfield and Barman scored early goals to keep the game even at 2-2. Occidental went on to take their first lead of the game at 3-2, but Green ended the first with back-to-back late goals to put the Sagehens up 4-3 heading into the second quarter.  

The Sagehens started off the second quarter keeping their lead over the Tigers with Whitfield and Plaschke scoring goals to keep the lead at two at 6-4. Occidental battled back to tie the game at 6-6 and despite a Chiang goal with 19 seconds left before halftime, Occidental netted the final goal of the first half to even the score at 7-7 heading into the break.  

The Tigers started the third quarter with the lead with a quick goal, but Lee responded with one for the Sagehens to tie the game at 8-8. The Tigers went ahead once more with a goal, but back-to-back goal from Hugar and Ryan put the Sagehens up again until the Tigers ended the third with the final goal to make it 10-10 heading into the fourth quarter.  

Pomona-Pitzer put the Tigers away in the fourth quarter after they opened the fourth with four-straight goals from Whitfield, Lee and back-to-back goal from Green to make sure the Sagehens left Los Angeles with a win.
