Sagehens Claim Sun Division Title With 20-7 Win Over Redlands

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Football team earned the first-ever SCIAC Sun Division Championship with their 20-7 win over Redlands on Saturday night at Merritt Field.
 
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improved to 6-3 overall and 5-2 in SCIAC play. Also with the win, the Sagehens will defend their SCIAC Championship against Chapman who won the SCIAC Surf Division.
 
 The Sagehens were led by Grady Russo who threw for 227 yards off of 23-33 with two touchdowns. Russo also led the rushing attack with 23 carries for 71 yards while Kenric Jameison had six carries for 36 yards.
 
Matthias Olson led all receivers with 87 yards off of seven catches with two touchdowns. Quinten Wimmer had six catches for 66 yards and Sander Wimmer had six catches for 50 yards.
 
Thomas McConnell led the defense with nine total tackles and a sack as well as a crucial blocked punt that led to a touchdown. Thali Cobb had seven total tackles with a sack as well while Andy Butler had a late interception to seal the game for the Sagehens.
 
Key Moments:
  • The Sagehens fumbled on their first possession of the game and gave Redlands the ball in good field position.  The Sagehen defense stayed solid all first half and held the Bulldogs scoreless to force a turnover on downs.
  • Pomona-Pitzer got their first score of the game to open the second quarter after a 13-play, 96-yard drive capped off by an Olson 14-yard touchdown catch from Russo to take a 7-0 lead.
  • Pomona-Pitzer doubled its lead after a punt was blocked by McConnell and picked up by Sean Maguire in the endzone to give the Sagehens a 14-0 lead with 13:04 left in the second quarter.
  • The Sagehens added their third touchdown of the half after Olson brought down another touchdown pass from Olson from eight yards out to take a 20-0 lead into halftime.
  • Redlands came out in the second half and looked to get back into the game after a quick three-and-out got their offense back on the field and then went 19 yards in three plays to cut the lead down to 20-7.
  • The defense had to come up big again for the Sagehens in the second half after the offense started to stall out and give Redlands the ball back in good field position. The defense forced Redlands to turn the ball over on downs three times in the second half and sealed the game with an interception by Butler with 3:13 left to play.
  • The Sagehen offense was able to get into victory formation and run out the remainder of the clock as the Sagehens took the Sun Division with their first-ever two-game season sweep over Redlands.
