WHITTIER, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team fell to SCIAC opponent Whittier College 64-45 on Wednesday night at Dave Jacobs Court.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 2-5 overall and start their SCIAC season 0-1.
The Sagehens were led by
Emily Lee who had 16 points and seven rebounds in the loss.
Jadyn Lee was also in double figures with 15 points while
Abigail Homan added six.
Pomona-Pitzer shot at 31.6% from the floor while shooting 26.1% from three while the Poets hit at a 42.6% clip and 50% from three hitting on seven of their 14 three attempts. The Poets controlled the rebound margin 42-30 with nine second-chance points and outscored the Sagehens 28-22 in the paint.
Pomona-Pitzer kept it close in the first quarter after the defense held the Poets to 13 points in the first 10 minutes of play. The Sagehens trailed by one early at 7-6 and after the Poets made a small run to lead 11-6, Pomona-Pitzer responded with six of the final eight points of the quarter to only trail by one at 13-12 heading into the second.
The second and third quarters hurt the Sagehens offensively after they only came away with eight points in the second and third quarters. Whittier was able to extend their lead after they pulled away late in the first half with a 13-0 run to end the second quarter to lead 38-20 heading into halftime.
The Sagehens slowed Whittier down on offense in the third quarter forcing the Poets lowest scoring quarter of the game at 12 points, but failed to cut into the lead as the offense couldn't get going in the third with eight points to trail 50-28 heading into the fourth.
The Sagehens went on to outscore Whittier in the fourth quarter 17-14, but the Poets did enough damage early on in the game to hold on for the win and hand the Sagehens a loss in their conference opener.
