Sagehens End David Wells With Loss To Vassar College

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team fell to non-conference opponent Vassar College 74-56 in the David Wells Classic on Saturday afternoon at Roberts Pavilion.

Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 2-4 overall to start the year.

The Sagehens were led by Jadyn Lee who matched her season-high with 20 points in the loss and pulled down eight rebounds as well. Emily Lee went for 14 points while Abigail Homan just missed a double-double with 10 points and eight boards and Katie Drais chipped in with nine off the bench.

A tough start and finish for the Sagehens against Vassar with both the first and fourth quarters being their lowest point quarters of the game with nine in each quarter. Vassar held a slight rebound advantage with 37 to the Sagehens' 34 and forced the Sagehens to turn the ball over 15 times with 17 points off of turnovers. Vassar also had a very nice night shooting the basketball hitting on 30-61 from the floor for 49% and 12-25 from three at 48% from beyond the arc.

Pomona-Pitzer started out with a small lead against Vassar with a 9-7 advantage in the first quarter but despite the Sagehens holding Vassar to only 10 points in the first, the Brewers hit a late three to take a 10-9 lead into the second quarter.

Both teams got the offenses going in the second quarter with the lead changing hands throughout the early stages of the second. A three-pointer by Emily Lee put the Sagehens up 17-14, but Vassar came back to reclaim the lead late in the first half to take a 28-24 lead into halftime.

Vassar came out of the locker room and quickly reached their largest lead of the game so far with a 42-28 lead with just three minutes gone in the third quarter.  The Sagehens went on to rally back and sparked a 16-4 run to trail by just two at 46-44 after a three by Drais with 2:50 left in the third. Unfortunately, the Sagehens couldn't hold their run as Vassar tacked on some late baskets to take a 56-47 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Sagehens couldn't get enough offense going in the fourth to make another big run in the game as they shot just 18% from the floor in the fourth as Vassar was able to hand the Sagehens a loss to end the David Wells Classic.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next jump into SCIAC play as they travel to Whittier on Wednesday, November 29th at 7:00 p.m.
