CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team defeated George Fox 79-65 to end the David Wells Classic on Saturday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens start the year 5-0 overall and went a perfect 2-0 in the David Wells Classic.
The Sagehens had four of their five starters hit double-digits in the win. Leading the way was
Ty Bergman who went for his fourth double-double of the season with 21 points and 11 rebounds.
Jasper Hedin tallied 18 points, five rebounds, and five assists,
Peyton Mullarkey had 16 points and
Charlie Treene had 12.
A good shooting night for Pomona-Pitzer after they connected on 30-62 from their shots from the floor at 48% and 12-27 from three for 44.4%. The Sagehens also controlled the boards outrebounding the Bruins 42-28 with 15 second-chance points. Pomona-Pitzer also outscored the Bruins 30-24 in the paint and held the Bruins to just 37% from the field.
The Sagehens started with a 7-2 lead to open the game after a Treene three before the Bruins closed the gap to 9-8 with five minutes gone in the first half. The Sagehens built back their lead and went up by 10 after a breakaway dunk from Bergman man it 27-17 with 9:07 left in the first half. George Fox came back yet again to make it a two-point game at 27-25, but the Sagehens held off the Bruins and added some late field goals in the first half to take a 36-32 lead into halftime.
George Fox came out of halftime and started with a 7-2 run to take their first lead of the game at 39-38, but the Sagehens quickly regained the lead with a 10-0 run capped off by a Hedin three to take a 48-39 lead with 14:19 left to play. The Bruins started to close the gap on Pomona-Pitzer again with some three-point opportunities, but the Sagehens answered again and opened up the game with a 70-55 lead after a three by Mullarkey with 4:03 to play.
After taking a 15-point lead, the Sagehens coasted in the final few minutes and ran out the clock to keep their perfect start to the season alive with their fifth win of the season.
