Sagehens Open David Wells With 59-51 Win Over East Texas Baptist

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team opened up David Wells with a 59-51 win over East Texas Baptist on Friday afternoon at Voelkel Gymnasium.
 
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improved to 2-3 overall.
 
The Sagehens were led by Jadyn Lee who went for 17 points with nine rebounds and six assists in the win. Emily Lee added a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds while Ali Bennett had 11 points and Michelle Ogasawara added 10 including a huge three to seal the game in the win.
 
The Sagehen defense held the Tigers to just 26.7% from the field and 16.7% from three while they hit on 34% from the field and 33.3% from beyond the arc. The Tigers outrebounded the Sagehens 37-33, but Pomona-Pitzer was solid from the free-throw line connecting on 11-13 shots from the stripe while East Texas Baptist only hit on 16-27 attempts.
 
The Sagehens jumped out to an early lead with hot shooting from three as Jadyn Lee and Emily Lee both hit three's to give the Sagehens a 6-0 lead to start. Ali Bennett added another three to make it 11-6, but the Tigers came back with the final five points of the quarter to tie the game at 11-11 heading into the second.
 
The Tigers took over the quarter early as they extended their run to 14-0 between the end of the first and midway through the second quarter to take a 20-11 lead. The Sagehens came back with a run of their own and tied the game at 25-25 with a three-pointer from Emily Lee and took the lead just before halftime with a breakaway layup from Anna Revill as the Sagehens took a 31-25 lead into halftime.
 
The Sagehens held an 11-point lead early in the second half after a three from Bennett to make it 36-25, but East Texas Baptist started to chip away at the Sagehens' lead and cut their deficit down to just three points at 41-38 heading into the fourth quarter.
 
Pomona-Pitzer took a 47-38 lead with 7:29 left in the fourth, but once again, the Tigers started to claw back into the game and took the lead at 48-47 after a 10-0 run with just under four minutes to play.
 
Jadyn Lee put the Sagehens back on top with a pull-up jumper to make it 52-51 and a huge corner three by Ogasawara made it 55-51 with a minute to play.  The Tigers would go on to turn the ball over on their next possession and Jadyn Lee closed the game out at the line with free throws to give the Sagehens a big win to open the David Well Classic.
 
Up Next: The Sagehens will head to Roberts Pavilion for day two of David Wells as they take on Vassar at 4:00 p.m.
