CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team survived game one of the David Wells Classic with a 67-64 win over Carleton College on Friday afternoon at Roberts Pavilion.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improved to 4-0 overall to start the year.
The Sagehens were led by
Jasper Hedin who went for his first career double-double with a season-high 21 points and 10 rebounds in the win.
Peyton Mullarkey gave the Sagehens a boost on offense with 15 points shooting 50% from the field while
Pete Boyle added 10 points and
Ty Bergman chipped in with nine points and nine rebounds.
A huge first half for the Sagehens propelled them to a win over the Knights after they put up 45 of their 67 points in the first half and shot 48% from the field. The Sagehens ended up shooting 44% from the field for the entire game and 29% from three, but Carleton got back into the game forcing the Sagehens to turn the ball over an uncharacteristic 18 times in the game.
Pomona-Pitzer outrebounded Carleton 48-31, but the Knights held the advantage with points in the paint, 32-22, and second-chance points, 20-11.
The Sagehens got out to a good start and held a 19-11 lead after a three by Mullarkey with just over five minutes gone in the game. Pomona-Pitzer maintained their sizeable lead and got the margin to 12 after an and-one by Hedin to make it 33-21 with 8:46 left until halftime. The Sagehens took their largest lead of the first half at 14 after another three by Mullarkey but the Knights cashed in on a three of their own just before half with the Sagehens up 45-34 heading into the locker room.
The game got interesting in a hurry after Carleton came out of halftime with a 17-7 run within the first five minutes to cut the deficit down to one point at 52-51. Despite struggling on offense coming out in the second half, the Sagehens regrouped and built their lead back with baskets from Mullarkey, Bergman, Boyle, and Hedin to go back up by eight points at 62-54 with 6:47 remaining.
Carleton made it interesting late after a few big baskets late put the game back into reach at 67-64 with 10 seconds to play. The Sagehens actually turned the ball over on the ensuing inbound, but Carlton couldn't get the desperation attempt to fall as the Sagehens hung on for the narrow victory at Roberts Pavilion.
