Sagehens Fall To Chicago In Season Opener

CHICAGO, IL. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team opened their season with an 82-66 loss in the Midway Classic to the University of Chicago on Saturday afternoon at the Gerald Ratner Athletics Center.

The Sagehens were led by Jadyn Lee who tallied a team-high 20 points in her first collegiate game. Emily Lee tacked on 19 points for the Sagehens while Abigail Homan had 13 for the third Sagehen in double figures for the loss.

Pomona-Pitzer shot 35.5% from the field and 23.8% from three in their first game out against the nationally ranked Maroons. Chicago outrebounded Pomona-Pitzer 54-32 with 24 offensive boards. The turnover battle was very even with the Sagehens turning the ball over 14 times to Chicago's 13, but the Sagehens capitalized with 15 points off of turnovers with Chicago only getting eight. Another big difference in the stat column was points in the paint with Chicago getting 46 of their 82 points in the paint to the Sagehens' 15.

Chicago got out to a good start with a 13-4 run to open the game, but the Sagehens came back quickly with seven-straight points capped off by a Jadyn Lee layup to cut the lead down to two points at 13-11. Chicago held off the late surge by the Sagehens and kept their two-point lead at 20-18 heading into the second quarter.

Pomona-Pitzer stayed with the Maroons early in the second quarter, but Chicago started to build its lead late in the first half. Chicago held a 29-25 lead about midway through the second quarter and slowly continued to add to their lead as the Sagehens were outscored 23-16 in the second quarter to put Chicago up 43-34 heading into halftime.

The Sagehens held Chicago to its lowest-scoring quarter of the night with 17 points in the third, but unfortunately, it was also their lowest-scoring quarter of the night with nine points in the third. The Sagehens got the lead down to seven points after a Michelle Ogasawara layup to make it 45-38, but the Maroons took over the third and stretched the lead to their largest of the night so far at 60-43 heading into the fourth.

Pomona-Pitzer ended with a positive as they outscored Chicago in the fourth quarter, but the big lead early by Chicago was too much to overcome for the Sagehens on the road as they fell in their season opener.

Up Next: The Sagehens will continue the Midway Classic against Wisconsin-Superior on Sunday, November 12th at 1:00 p.m.
