CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team came away with a 15-9 win over SCIAC opponent Cal Lutheran on Saturday afternoon at Haldeman Pool.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improve to 4-12 overall and 2-1 to start SCIAC play.
The Sagehens had four players with two goals as
Zach Whitfield,
Conrad Hugar,
Nico Perna, and
Kyle Green shared a team-high in the win while
Maxim Koretsky,
Zachary Kaplan,
Jacob Whiting,
Chase Barman,
Miles Chiang,
Andrew Plaschke and
Jack Ryan had one.
Pomona-Pitzer shot out of the gate in the first quarter with the first five goals of the game. Green, Perna, Chiang, Whitfield, and Hugar netted goals to start the game to put the Sagehens up 5-0 midway through the first. Cal Lutheran got two goals back in the first but another goal from Kaplan gave the Sagehens a 6-2 lead after the first.
Pomona-Pitzer continued to throttle the offense with goals from Whitfield, Hugar, and Plaschke while the defense shut out the Kingsmen in the second quarter to take a big 9-2 lead at halftime.
It was more of the same from the Sagehens in the second half after they outscored Cal Lutheran 5-2 in the third. The Sagehens opened the second half with back-to-back goals from Barman and Perna before the two teams alternated goals to with Ryan and Koretsky finding the back of the net. Whiting ended the third with a goal to make it 14-4 heading into the fourth.
Cal Lutheran made the score look better than it was in the fourth after they put five goals up in the fourth, but the big first half from Pomona-Pitzer was enough to ride their lead out in the fourth quarter as the Sagehens came away with the big home win.
