THOUSAND OAKS, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Football team came back on the road for a 38-24 victory over SCIAC opponent Cal Lutheran on Saturday night at Rolland Stadium.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improved to 5-3 overall and 4-2 in SCAC play.
First-year
Grady Russo led the Sagehens in their win over the Kingsmen after he threw for 114 yards on 12-17 with three touchdowns. Russo also led the rushing attack with 201 yards on the ground from 27 carries and two touchdowns.
Matthias Olson led the receiving group with 46 yards and two scores while
Sander Wimmer had 37 yards on three catches and
Quinten Wimmer had four catches for 22 yards.
Sean Maguire and
Charlie Russo shared a team-high six tackles on defense with
William Welch and
Sathya Siddapureddy picking up a sack each.
Kalani Pickett and
Ben Porter also picked up an interception each with the Sagehen defense earning two takeaways.
Key Moments:
- The Sagehens got off to a poor start in their road SCIAC contest with an interception on their first drive of the game that set up the first Cal Lutheran touchdown.
- The Kingsmen jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first after they scored from a Sagehen interception, forced a turnover on downs, and scored on a drive with great field position to start the game with a three-score advantage.
- Pomona-Pitzer got on the board early in the second quarter after Russo broke free with a 43-yard run to cut the lead down to 21-7.
- Cal Lutheran added another field goal to make it 24-7, but the Sagehens had two huge drives at the end of the first half to get back within striking distance.
- Quinten Wimmer found the endzone off of a five-yard pass from Russo and Olson scored just before half from a 25-yard stroke from Russo as the Sagehens cut the deficit down to 24-21 heading into halftime.
- The Sagehen defense stepped up in the second half and didn't allow a point from the Kingsmen in the final two-quarters of the game.
- Pomona-Pitzer came back with their first lead of the game in the second half as Russo rushed for a 30-yard score to put the Sagehens up 28-24.
- The Sagehens added some insurance scores as well with Olson's second touchdown of the night from 21 yards out and a Cameron Shirangi 22-yard field goal to put the Kingsmen away in the second half.
