CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team came away with a doubleheader split as they defeated SCIAC opponent Occidental 13-8 and fell to nonconference opponent Golden West 12-6 on Saturday afternoon at Haldeman Pool.
Season Impact: With the split, the Sagehens move to 11-16 overall and 6-2 in SCIAC play.
Pomona-Pitzer 13, Occidental 8
The Sagehens were led by
Zach Whitfield and
Chase Barman who each netted two goals in the win. Pomona-Pitzer had 11 different goal scorers in the game as
Kyle Green,
Maxim Koretsky,
Zachary Kaplan,
Nico Perna,
Indigo Lee,
Conrad Hugar,
Miles Chiang,
Tommy Ryan, and
Jack Ryan all had one goal apiece.
Both teams took a minute to get going as the Sagehens fired the first goal of the game three minutes in from Barman to take a 1-0 lead. Occidental responded with back-to-back goals to take their only lead of the game to force the Sagehens to come back with goals from Ryan and Whitfield to take a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Whitfield and Hugar got the Sagehens out to a good start in the second quarter to extend their lead to 5-2 while Lee and Koretsky also netted goals in the second to put the Sagehens on top 7-4 heading into halftime.
The Sagehens gave themselves some breathing room out of halftime with Barman and Kaplan extending the lead to 9-5 before Oxy got their first goal of the half with just 24 seconds left in the third to make it 9-6 in favor of Pomona-Pitzer heading into the fourth quarter.
Chiang, Green, and Perna put the game away with goals to open the fourth while Ryan ended the fourth with a goal with 1:38 to play as the Sagehens bounced back from their loss against CMS with a SCIAC win over Occidental.
Pomona-Pitzer 6, Golden West 12
The Sagehens were led by Hugar and Whitfield who each shared a team-high with two goals in the loss. Green and Whiting also got on the scoresheet with one goal each.
Pomona-Pitzer started out with a good first quarter as Hugar and Whitfield kept the Sagehens in the game early as they stayed even with Golden West at 3-3 at the end of the first quarter.
Hugar put the Sagehens up one to start the second quarter with a 4-3 lead, but Golden West took over the game in the second and third quarters as they stretched their lead to 10-4 with seven-straight goals to start the fourth with a 10-4 lead.
Green and Whiting netted their goals in the fourth, but the lead was too much to overcome as the Sagehens dropped game two of their doubleheader to Golden West.
