Sagehens Take Down CMS In Sixth Street Rivalry

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team came away with a 3-1 win over SCIAC rival CMS on Wednesday night at Pritzlaff Field.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improved to 4-6-5 overall and 3-4-4 in SCIAC play. This also marks the first time the Sagehens have defeated the Stags since 2017.

The Sagehens had three different goal scorers in the game as Keyon Namdar, Mattin Khoshzaban, and Aidan MacLennan all found the back of the net in the win with Guy Fuchs picking up the assist on the Namdar goal.

CMS actually outshot the Sagehens in the game 17-12 but both teams had eight shots on goal. CMS dominated corners with 10 chances to the Sagehens' two and a very physical game between the two schools with 14 fouls each called.

Pomona-Pitzer got out to a good start in the Sixth Street Rivalry as they searched for an early goal on the road to play from in front. The Sagehens' efforts paid off after a turnover in the CMS midfield led to Fuchs finding Namdar who struck a beautiful first-time shot with his left foot into the upper 90 of the goal to put the Sagehens up 1-0 in the 19th minute of the match.

The Sagehens went on to double their lead after a penalty opportunity allowed Khoshzaban to bury a PK into the back of the net to extend the lead to 2-0 in the 37th minute.

After taking a 2-0 lead on the road, the Sagehens looked to keep their lead heading into halftime, but the Stags pulled one back in the final five minutes of the first half with a goal to cut the lead down to 2-1 heading into the break.

CMS tried desperately to find an equalizer in the second half, but the Sagehens did well to limit the chances for the Stags and hold possession to preserve their lead. As the game went on, CMS pushed more attackers upfield which left them open for another chance for the Sagehens. Namdar found himself on a breakaway and was taken out by a tactical challenge by the CMS defender to set up another Sagehen opportunity by way of a penalty kick. MacLennan stepped up to the spot and buried the dagger in the 88th minute as the Sagehens took a Sixth Street Rivalry win at Pritzlaff Field.

Up Next: The Sagehens will end their season at Chapman on Saturday, October 28th at 7:00 p.m
