LA VERNE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Football team doubled up on their wins over SCIAC opponent La Verne this season with a 20-7 win at Ortmayer Stadium.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improved to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in SCIAC play.
Grady Russo led the passing attack for the Sagehens after he went 13-23 for 192 yards. Russo also led the ground game with 21 rushes for 123 yards while
Matthias Olson had two catches for 97 yards. The Sagehens scored both touchdowns on the ground as
Sander Wimmer and
Quinten Wimmer had rushing scores while kicker
Cameron Shirangi hit a 23 and 47-yard field goal.
Thomas McConnell led the defense for the Sagehens with seven tackles while
Thali Cobb came away with a sack and
Tanner Gomes with an interception.
The Sagehens came away with the road win despite losing the turnover battle against La Verne. The Sagehens had three interceptions in the game while having one takeaway on defense. Pomona-Pitzer came away with 353 yards of total offense with 126 on the ground and 227 through the air.
Key Moments:
- A slow-moving first half started with five consecutive punts to start the game before the Sagehens got the first score off of a one-yard run by Sander Wimmer to cap off a five-play, 70-yard drive to take a 7-0 lead into halftime.
- Pomona-Pitzer scored on its opening drive of the second half as this time it was Quinten Wimmer who punched in a short run on the goal line to take a 14-0 lead with 11 minutes left in the third quarter.
- The Sagehen offense struggled to get going in the second half, but Shirangi was able to extend the lead with two field goals in the fourth quarter.
- La Verne ruined the shutout with a seven-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to cut the lead down to 17-7, but Shirangi capped off the day with a field goal with 1:11 to play to push the lead to 20-7 and secured the win for Pomona-Pitzer.
