Sagehens Take Overtime Thriller Over Chapman 15-14

ORANGE, CA. -- The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team came away with a thrilling 15-14 overtime win over SCIAC opponent Chapman on Wednesday night at Allred Aquatics Center.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improved to 8-14 overall and 4-1 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by Kyle Green who netted a game-high four goals in the win. Chase Barman, Mile Chiang and Zach Whitfield all had two goals for the Sagehens while Maxim Koretsky, Zachary Kaplan, Indigo Lee, Conrad Hugar, and Andrew Plaschke had one.

The Sagehens and Panthers matched each other goal for goal throughout the entire four quarters of this SCIAC battle. Pomona-Pitzer and Chapman started with three goals each in the first quarter as Chiang, Hugar, and Lee all scored goals for the Sagehens to take a 3-3 scoreline into the second.

The Sagehens and Panthers alternated goals in the second with Whitfield and Kaplan getting on the scoresheet to take a 5-5 score into halftime.

Pomona-Pitzer took a big lead in the third as they looked to be on their way to pull away from the Panthers on the road. Barman and Chiang got the Sagehens up two at 7-5, and after a Chapman goal, the Sagehens added two more from Barman and Plaschke to take a 9-6 lead with just under two minutes left in the third quarter.

The Panthers made a comeback late in the third with three-straight goals to end the third to tie the game at 9-9 heading into the fourth.

Pomona-Pitzer kept a one goal lead in the fourth as Whitfield and Green kept the Sagehens in front, but Chapman was able to convert a lob goal as time expired to send the game into overtime.

The Panthers got out to a lead to start the first overtime period, but the Sagehen defense settled down and Green converted back-to-back goals followed by one by Koretsky as the Sagehens escaped Chapman with the win.
