Sagehens Hold Off Poets For 2-1 Victory

CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 18 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team defeated SCIAC opponent Whittier 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.

Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens stay unbeaten and move to 12-0-2 overall and 8-0-2 in SCIAC play. The Sagehens also stay atop the SCIAC standings and have at least guaranteed a spot in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament with the win today.

Ella Endo and Kelsey Shintaku were the goal scorers for the Sagehens in the win while Anjali Nuggehalli earned an assist on Shintaku's goal. Patricia DePalma got the win in goal for Pomona-Pitzer with two saves.

The Sagehens outshot the Poets 22-6 with 10 shots on goal while Whittier had six shots with three on target. Pomona-Pitzer also had five corner opportunities with Whittier having three.

The Poets came out aggressive on offense as they tried to get out to an early lead against Pomona-Pitzer on their home field.  Whittier had a few early chances on goal but was sent away by the Pomona-Pitzer backline and DePalma.  After weathering the storm on defense, the Sagehens broke through with the day's first goal as Endo settled a rebound in the box and cut a ball across goal with her left foot to put the Sagehens on top 1-0 in the 32nd minute.

After taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, the Sagehens doubled up their lead as Nuggehalli played in a cross to Shintaku who took a touch to beat her defender and slotted in the goal to give the Sagehens a 2-0 lead in the 51st minute.

The Poets did something not many teams have been able to do and that is score on the Sagehens on their home field. The Poets took advantage of a miscommunication by the defender and goalkeeper and played a ball back into the box and was hit into an open net to cut the lead down to 2-1 in the 53rd minute.

Whittier turned up the aggression on offense as they tried to get an equalizer to steal a point on the road, but the Sagehen defense stayed solid late in the game as the Sagehens came away with the one-goal victory.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next head to SCIAC opponent Caltech on Saturday, October 21st at 11:00 a.m.
