Sagehens Earn Fifth-Straight Victory with Road Win Over Panthers

ORANGE, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer volleyball team picked up their fifth-straight victory with a 3-1 (25-18, 16-25, 25-17, 25-23) win over the Chapman Panthers on the road. Paige Mountanos and Samantha Grabb led the Sagehens attack as the duo combined for 32 kills with Mountanos earning 19 of her own with a .400 hitting percentage while Grabb ended with 13 and a .478 hitting percentage. Kylie Mies and Eleanor Nicholson both recorded double-digit assists with Mies dishing out 21 while Nicholson recorded 16. Paige Wilson ended the night with seven kills and 30 digs while Corrina Benson recorded 24 digs. The Sagehens will return to Voelkel this Friday when they host the Occidental Tigers at 7:00 p.m. before traveling to CMS at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. 
 
How It Happened
The Panthers held the early advantage in set one, starting the night with a 5-0 run before extending their lead to 10-6. The Sagehens managed to respond with an 8-5 run with kills from Grabb and Charlotte Sekerka, cutting the Chapman lead to 15-14, forcing the Panthers to call a timeout. Pomona-Pitzer continued to charge forward out of the break, using an 8-3 lead with kills from Mountanos, Grabb, Wilson, and Chloe Gill to take the lead at 22-18 and force another Panthers timeout. The Sagehens earned the next three points out of the break to take set one 25-18. 
 
The Sagehens held the early advantage in set two after working to a short 4-4 tie before taking the lead at 7-5. The Panthers managed to counter with a 9-3 run to take the lead at 14-10 and force a Sagehen timeout. Chapman continued to attack as they used an 11-6 run to take set two 25-16. 
 
In set three, the Sagehens opened the set with a 3-0 run with kills from Mountanos and Kellan Hayes. The set was an evenly matched battle as the two teams traded attacks with the Sagehens maintaining their lead at 10-7. The Sagehens managed to earn a slight 8-7 edge in a run that forced a timeout with Pomona-Pitzer leading 18-14. The break was ineffective for the Panthers as the Sagehens ended set three on a 7-3 run to take the set 25-17. 
 
Chapman took an early 6-3 lead in set four, but the Sagehens responded, scoring eight of the next 13 points to tie the set at 11-11 with Hayes, Nicholson, Grabb, Mies, and Gill all recorded kills. The run continued for the Sagehens as Paige Mountanos recorded three kills while chiming in for a block with Sekerka to take the lead at 15-11 and force a Panthers timeout. The Sagehens continued to extend their lead, making their way to a 20-15 advantage to force another Chapman break. A 5-3 run from the Panthers prompted a Sagehen timeout with Chapman cutting the lead to 23-20. The Panthers continued to pressure, using a 3-1 to force another timeout with the Sagehens leading 24-23. Out of the break, Pomona-Pitzer got the final point off a kill from Chloe Gill to secure the 25-23 set win and 3-1 victory overall.
