Sagehens Sweep Tigers en Route to Sixth Straight Victory

CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer volleyball team extended their win streak to six games with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-8, 25-22) victory over the Occidental Tigers on Friday night. With the win, the Sagehens are now 13-9 overall with a 9-2 conference record. The Sagehens performed well across the board against the Tigers, recording 41 kills with a .308 hitting percentage with nine aces on the night. Paige Mountanos and Paige Wilson led the attack with 12 kills and 10 kills, recording hitting percentages of .455 and .588, respectively. Corrina Benson recorded 17 digs with Savanna Cespedes dishing out 15 assists while recording four aces. The Sagehens will be back in action tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. when they travel across the street to take on the CMS Athenas.

How It Happened
Despite the strong offensive showing for the Sagehens, it was Occidental who had the early advantage in set one after they started the game on a 6-4 run before extending their lead to 8-5. From there, the Sagehens picked up steam as Paige Wilson, Kellan Hayes, and Paige Mountanos all recorded kills to aid in a 12-1 run, forcing the Tigers to call a timeout with Pomona-Pitzer leading 17-9. The Tigers recorded the first point out of the break, but the Sagehens closed the set on an 8-1 run with kills from Chloe Gill, Charlotte Sekerka, Paige Mountanos, and Samantha Grabb to take set one 25-11.

The Sagehens wasted no time in the second set, starting the game on a 7-2 run before extending their lead to 10-1 with Mountanos recording three kills before Kellan Hayes recording an ace. A 4-1 run from the Tigers cut the Sagehen lead to 11-7 but an 11-1 Sagehen run forced an Occidental timeout with Wilson, Gill, and Tene Ariyo all recording kills to give the Sagehens a 22-8 lead. Paige Wilson and Tene Ariyo recorded the final three kills of the set with Ariyo recording the final attack to give the Sagehens the 25-8 set two victory.

Set three proved to be a bigger test for the Sagehens as Occidental worked to a 4-4 tie before taking the lead at 8-4 to force Pomona-Pitzer to call a timeout. The Sagehens began to chip away at the Occidental lead, but the Tigers worked their way to a 15-10 advantage after a slight 7-6 edge in points. From there, the Sagehens regrouped with a 7-0 run to regain the lead at 17-15 but Occidental countered to tie the game at 18-18. Pomona-Pitzer went on a quick 4-1 run to take the lead at 22-19 and force the Tigers to call a timeout. The Tigers took the next two points to cut the lead to 22-21 but a service error, Paige Wilson ace, and Chloe Gill kill capped off the 25-22 victory to complete the sweep for the Sagehens.
