Sagehens Sweep Regals on Friday Night

CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer volleyball team defeated the Cal Lutheran Regals for the second time this week, this time earning a clean 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-15) sweep on Friday night. Paige Wilson led the team's attack with 11 kills and a .417 hitting percentage while Corrina Benson anchored the defense with 19 digs with Wilson recording 15 of her own. Savanna Cespedes (13), Kylie Mies (12), and Eleanor Nicholson (11) all recorded double-digit assists on the evening. With the win, the Sagehens are now 11-9 on the season with a 7-2 conference record. Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Oct. 17 when they travel to Chapman at 7:00 p.m.

How It Happened
The Regals struck first but the Sagehens had the earlier momentum as they went on a 12-5 run with kills from Kellan Hayes, Paige Wilson, Charlotte Sekerka, and Chloe Gill. The Sagehens continued to charge forward, using an 8-4 run to take a convincing 20-10 lead with Wilson recording an ace in that stretch with Samantha Grabb recording a kill. Out of the break, the Regals narrowly outscored Pomona-Pitzer 6-5 but the five Sagehens points capped off the 25-16 set one win as Wilson, Gill, Sekerka, and Paige Mountanos all recorded kills in the run.

Set two was a much closer battle in the early stages of the game as the two teams worked to an early 4-4 tie before finding themselves gridlocked at 5-5, 6-6, and 10-10. From there, Pomona-Pitzer was able to pull ahead with an 8-3 run that saw kills from Wilson, Gill, Grabb, and Hayes to take an 18-13 lead. The Sagehens continued to fight for the finish with Savanna Cespedes, Gill, and Wilson each recording a kill to extend the Sagehens lead to 23-16. The Sagehens finished off the set with a Kellan Hayes kill to win the set 25-19.

The Sagehens wasted no time in set three as they torched the Regals with kills from Chloe Gill (3), Paige Wilson, Paige Mountanos, Samantha Grabb, and Eleanor Nicholson to take an 11-4 lead and force Cal Lutheran to talk things over with a timeout. The Regals were able to record a block out of the break, but the Sagehens pushed forward with a 7-3 lead to extend their lead to 18-8 with Wilson, Sekerka, and Grabb all recording kills. The Regals managed to rally back into the contest with a 7-3 run, cutting the Sagehen lead to 21-15 but Pomona-Pitzer put the match to an end with a 4-0 run with kills from Grabb, Hayes, Wilson, and a game-winning block from Hayes and Grabb to take set three 25-15, finishing off the Friday sweep.
