No. 19 Sagehens Draw At Cal Lutheran 1-1

THOUSAND OAKS, CA. – The No. 19 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team drew with SCIAC opponent Cal Lutheran 1-1 on Wednesday night at Rolland Stadium.

Season Impact: with the draw, the Sagehens move to the top of the SCIAC with a 10-0-2 overall record and 6-0-2 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by Spencer Deutz who netted the only goal for the Sagehens by way of a penalty kick. Patricia DePalma had another spectacular night in goal after she let in only one goal from a penalty shot and had five saves with one of them a penalty kick in the 78th minute.

The Sagehens went into Thousand Oaks for a matchup between the top two teams in the SCIAC this season with big implications if either team could come away with a win. The Sagehens haven't won at Rolland Stadium since 2012 in the SCIAC Tournament Championship game and haven't won in the regular season since 2009.

The Sagehens were able to strike first in the battle of SCIAC heavyweights after a handball in the box gave Pomona-Pitzer a penalty kick in the 23rd minute. Deutz converted the PK for the Sagehens as they took an early 1-0 lead on the road.

The Sagehens controlled the rest of the first half, but with one minute to play until halftime, it was Pomona-Pitzer's defense that was called for a handball in the box and gave Cal Lutheran a penalty kick opportunity. The Regals went on to convert their PK chance as both teams went into halftime tied at 1-1 with each having a penalty kick goal.

The Regals and Sagehens had a back-and-forth second half with both teams possessing the ball and getting into each other's defensive third. Cal Lutheran had a prime opportunity to steal the game in with 12 minutes to play as the Sagehens were called for another penalty in the box to set up the third PK of the game.  The Regals set up to take the kick, but it was saved by DePalma to keep the game tied at 1-1.

The Sagehens had the final big chance of the night after the Cal Lutheran goalkeeper came out of her box and grabbed the ball to set up a free kick right on the edge of the box with a minute left to play.  Deutz took the shot, and the ball went just wide of the goal as the Sagehens left Cal Lutheran with a 1-1 draw.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next travel to SCIAC opponent Redlands on Saturday, October 14th at 11:00 a.m.
