CLREMONT, Ca. – The No. 19 Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team came away with a 5-4 win over No. 5 Emory and fell to No. 8 Trinity 5-3 on Friday afternoon at the Pauley Tennis Courts.
Season Impact: With the split, the Sagehens move to 7-3 overall.
Pomona-Pitzer 5, Emory 4
The Sagehens started off the Stag-Hen Tournament with a huge comeback upset over No. 5 Emory. Pomona-Pitzer dropped two of the three doubles matches to start the competition. The Sagehens dropped matches at doubles 1 and 2, but the team of Mukund Madabhushi and Nils Skattum grinded out a big 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles to get the Sagehens on the board heading into singles.
Pomona-Pitzer started out well with two set wins at No. 1, 3 and 4 to tie the match at 4-4. Hayden Snyder won at No. 1 singles 6-3, 7-5 followed by Charlie Stark at No. 3 and Kush Patel at No. 4 with scores of 6-4, 6-4 and 6-3, 6-1, respectively.
The match came down to Jansen Comadena at No. 5 singles. Comadena lost a tiebreaker in set one and had to play from behind with his team needing the point for the clinch. Comadena came back in set two for a 6-3 win and then after trailing by two games in set three, came back with wins in the final four games to take a 6-4 win as the Sagehens stormed the court in the upset over Emory.
Pomona-Pitzer 3, Trinity 5
After beating the No. 5 team in the country, the Sagehens had their sights set on another top-10 opponent in the second contest of the Stag-Hen Tournament. Pomona-Pitzer fell behind during the doubles competition as they took one win at the No. 2 position with Charlie Stark and Hayden Snyder earning an 8-2 win as the Sagehens trailed 2-1 heading into singles.
Kush Patel earned the second point for the Sagehens at the No. 4 singles with a 7-5 win in set one and a dominating 6-1 win in set two. Charlie Stark doubled his wins against the Tigers with a three-set win at No. 3 singles. Stark started out with a 6-1 loss in set one but began to find his game with a 6-3 win in set two and then a sweep of 6-0 in set three.
The Sagehens went on to lose two three-set matches at No. 2 and No. 6 singles as Mukund Madabhushi fell by the scores of 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 and Jack Weiler with scores of 7-6, 3-6, 6-2 as the Sagehens come up just short of their doubleheader upset.
