CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team started off its spring season 2-0 with a 5-4 win over Irvine Valley College and an 8-1 win over Westmont College on Friday afternoon at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
Season Impact: With the wins, the Sagehens start off 2-0 on the year.
Pomona-Pitzer 5, Irvine Valley College 4
The Sagehens got out to a 2-1 lead after doubles with close wins at Doubles 2 and 3. The Sagehen team of Mukund Madabhushi and Charlie Stark fell at the No. 1 doubles spot 8-3, but the Sagehens took wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take a 2-1 lead. Owen Kelley and Jansen Comadena edged out an 8-7 win while Matthew Feng and Hayden Snyder took No. 3 Doubles, 8-6.
The Sagehens also took wins at singles No. 3, 5 and 6. Snyder doubled up his wins for the day with a 5-1, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles with his double partner, Feng, also earning his second win of the day with a 6-2, 7-5 win. The only three-set match of the day came at No. 5 as Kush Patel won the first set 6-2 and fell in the second set 2-6 to set up an ever important third set to decide the match. Patel ended up with a comfortable 6-2 win to seal the victory for the Sagehens over the Lasers 5-4.
Pomona-Pitzer 8, Westmont 1
The Sagehens took two of the three doubles matches with wins at two and three. Ethan Lee and Jack Weiler started out with a win at No. 2 doubles by the score of 8-5 while Eshaan Lumba and Clark Steinhauser got their first collegiate doubles wins at No. 3, 8-4.
Pomona-Pitzer ended up sweeping the singles competition with all six wins. Charlie Stark ended up going three sets for the win as he fell in set one, 3-6 but came back for wins of 7-5 and 6-2 to earnt he victory. Ethan Lee earned a win at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-1 while Kelley got the win at No. 3 singles 6-3, 6-3. Lumba doubled up his wins against Westmont with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles as well as Weiler and Setinhauser who earned wins of 6-0, 6-1 and 6-3, 7-5, respectively.
